Cyber Essentials

What is Cyber Essentials?

Cyber Essentials is the Government-backed cyber security certification.  The assessment framework is designed to be clear and straight forward, and the wording is intended to support managers without technical knowledge.

Under the Data Protection Act 2018, it is necessary for an organisation to evidence they are using ‘appropriate technical and organisational measures’. Cyber Essentials allows you to document and evidence compliance, lower risks and protect your school. Successful certification includes free cyber liability insurance.

The Cyber Essentials scheme addresses five key areas of security which, when correctly implemented can prevent over 80% of simple cyber-attacks. These key controls include:

  • Securing your Internet connection
  • Securing your devices and software
  • Controlling access to your data and services
  • Protecting from viruses and other malware
  • Keeping your devices and software up to date

The rise in cyber-attacks against schools take many forms, including phishing emails, malware from bogus websites and downloads, ransomware attacks and Denial of Service attacks.

The Education Data Hub team offer a range services to support you on your journey to cyber essentials certification.
