Teaching the use of freely available assistive tools to remove barriers and support pupils in building transferable skills which last a lifetime. Especially useful for teaching SEND learners remotely.

Course Outline

Pupils with a range of needs can be supported by accessibility tools. Students with dyslexia, scotopic sensitivity (Irlen) syndrome, hearing impairments, visual difficulties and physical impairments can all be supported by the use of technology.This course will show you how to access, use, and apply a number of tools which will aid differentiation and significantly improve outcomes.

Course Description

Assistive technology can help pupils to access the content you have already prepared for the classroom.

Tools provided as part of Microsoft Office and Microsoft Edge can remove barriers and accessibility and included with standard education licenses, without additional cost.

During this course you will learn to:

  • Use Immersive Reader to change background colours, fonts and line spacing.
  • Use the line focus to de-clutter pages
  • Use picture dictionary for early years / SEN pupils
  • Use translate to support EAL students
  • Use Microsoft Edge to enable the ‘read aloud’ function on webpages.
  • Use dictate to convert speech to text.
  • Use Office Lens to transform text on a printed page into digital content that can be read aloud.

You will be able to utilise assistive technology and accessibility tools to remove barriers to learning and promote inclusion for pupils.

Course Audience

SENCOs, Teachers, TAs and all those working with SEND learners. May also support staff with accessibility needs.
